Please note: While the artwork produced for this project was fully drawn and coloured by myself, some branding within this page makes use of copyrighted characters and designs wholly owned by Nickelodeon and Viacom, due to the nature of this project. I do not hold any personal copyright of any character designs used within this project and I do not claim any ownership of them as such. However, the logo design for this project is exempt from this warning, as no designs or branding from the aforementioned companies were used during it's design production.
Recently, I was approached by a friend of mine within a games community with the idea of providing branding for a series of online community tournaments for the video game "Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl". After multiple discussions with the organizer to lock down a theme for the actual artwork, we eventually settled on a faux-retro theme inspired by old cereal packet branding, such as those found on cereals produced by the Quaker Oats company.
After a theme was decided, I was given the duties of producing a logo design, key branding artwork (featuring characters from Nickelodeon that were featured in the video game) and a tiled illustration designed specifically for on-stream motion graphics. I worked with the organizer of the event to make sure all of the branding work was to their standards and was ready for active use. After the work was completed, the organizer of the tournament was very positive and appreciative of the work, with them noting that multiple participants were not only very appreciative of the branding work, but it also resulted in some people entering the events solely based on the strength of the illustration works provided.
Key illustrated artwork depicting multiple characters from the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl fighting game. From left to right are Garfield, Reptar (Rugrats) and Toph Beifong (Avatar: The Last Airbender). The marshmallow shapes shown in the cereal bowl depict the characters Helga G Pataki (Hey Arnold), Patrick Star (Spongebob Squarepants) and Powdered Toast Man (The Ren & Stimpy Show), respectively. All these characters appeared in this key art at the request of the tournament organizer.
The overall design of the illustration was primarily inspired by 1960's animation and art design examples, such as the mix of pure black and multi-coloured linework, the colour bleed from the background elements and the overall colour scheme of the background and props. The artwork of the key characters were also inspired by older cereal mascots of the era, such as the large cartoon eyes and thick black outlines on each character.
Logo design produced for the Saturday Snackdown event. This logo's mix of cursive text and large comic book letter was inspired by logo designs on cereal boxes and the general design discrepancies between the brand name and the product shown on the packaging. The explosion-esque graphic behind the text was used to help the logo stand out when it was made smaller during game matches on the main tournament live stream.
Tiled Background Graphics produced for the tournament's main stream. Some of the foods shown were requested to be based on various Nickelodeon properties featured in the game and/or the game's community, such as Spongebob Squarepants, Garfield, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rocko's Modern Life, Avatar The Last Airbender, Hey Arnold and Rugrats. The greyscale version provided was specifically requested by the client in order to allow them to adjust the colours of the images by themselves from within their own editing software.
