From 2022 until 2023, I assisted on the video game project 'Griptape Havok' as a 2D sprite animator and asset artist, with my initial hiring having been done to produce various sprites for the project, as well as prop designs for in-game assets. After work on the asset work had been completed, the team lead felt that my work on the props was in high-enough quality that I could also assist with producing some character animation work as well, leading to me working on some gameplay animations for one of the in-game playable characters. This work was overall praised well by the team during production, with my work being highlighted multiple times in team discussions and on social media.
During production of the spritework, I primarily made use of Clip Studio Paint Ex for asset design, rough animation and clean-up animation, with Opentoonz being used to compile animations into spritesheets for final use in-engine.
During production, I was tasked with producing two key gameplay animations for the character Millie (also known as Mils), who was originally designed by the artist LimeHazard. These animations were referenced as closely as possible to the illustration style of Lime, based on the reference art that had been provided of the character's idle poses. The attack animation's exaggarated smears were referenced from other attack animations produced by the team which featured a similar animation style, while the jumping animation was given a more stylish flair to suit the more acrobatic and risky nature of Mils as a skater punk.
Prior to working on sprite animation for Mils, I was tasked with producing multiple prop designs and accompanying animations for Griptape Havok's interactable environments, such as breakable debris and signage that could be directly interacted with by the player characters. Shown below are some specific examples I felt best represent the work I did on these earlier experiences on the project.
